Teneo completes first UK deployment of new Riverbed Steelhead Mobile

Teneo has enabled Industrial Technology Systems Ltd (ITS) to complete a consolidation of two Microsoft Exchange Servers into one, whilst speeding up email communications between its Warrington office and its headquarters in Middlesbrough and extending application performance improvements and data traffic speed increases to its remote workers.

ITS explored how to enable the exchange server consolidation without affecting performance of the network for users, particularly as the Middlesbrough office was based on an industrial estate where broadband offerings from telecoms providers were limited.

Malcolm Knott, managing director, ITS, explained:
“The leased line option looked expensive so we explored the use of Application Performance Management solutions and came across Riverbed's technology which promised to speed up access to applications and the movement of data traffic over our Wide Area Network by reducing network latency and chatter.”

ITS contracted leading application performance management solutions provider Teneo, which recommended deployment of Riverbed Steelhead Appliance at each office. Teneo also recommended the use of the recently-launched Riverbed Steelhead Mobile Controller (SMC) at the Middlesbrough office and on eight mobile workers’ laptops so they could access email and other vital applications quickly, from wherever they were, over a standard broadband internet connection.

In rigorous tests, involving the movement of large files between offices and the mobile workers, Teneo was able to accelerate data traffic speeds by up to six times.

James Hall, director, Teneo, commented on the results:
“For general use we achieved a 60 per cent increase in data speed whilst ITS’ remote users saw performance improvements of up to 80 per cent. This pilot proved to us that the improvements offered by the new Riverbed Steelhead Mobile make it worth looking at by all companies trying to improve data and application access speeds for their busy, often mobile workforce.”

Knott reiterated the benefits:
“Staff can now enter information directly into our CRM system whilst at the client site or at home, rather than waiting until they are next in the office. This gives us much more up-to-date information which we can use to do a better job for our customers in a more timely way.”

Teneo estimated that ITS would have had to increase its bandwidth capacity eight times and spend up to three times more than the Riverbed solution cost in total.

Knott summed up the benefits in terms of staff productivity:
“We know that this solution has increased the productivity of our staff. If one of our employees spends just one and a half minutes less time to download and update a document on their laptops each time they do it, that adds up when you are talking about over sixty staff working in our offices and a further six doing the same from a client site or home. Based on this productivity gain alone we expect to achieve complete ROI on the investment within 12 months.”
